2019 Minnesota State Fair food

Fair foods aren’t generally known for being healthy, but you can make smart choices this year when you’re swimming through the masses looking for something to eat. According to WebMD, certain foods can diminish signs of aging, protect the skin against sun damage, and minimize inflammation. We’ve taken a look at the new 2019 Minnesota State Fair food and pulled out a few recommendations for grub rich in antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins that may promote healthy, youthful skin.

Seafood

Shrimp and crab are a great source of selenium. According to the National Institutes of Health, selenium protects the body against cell and tissue damage from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants caused by diet, lifestyle, or environmental factors. Try Funky Grits’ Shrimp & Grits Fritters at the fair to incorporate this essential mineral in your diet for the day.

Freshwater Fish

Tuna and salmon contain CoQ10, a nutrient that helps generate energy in the cells and softens wrinkles and other signs of aging. This compound also protects the body from oxidative damage from UV rays. You can get smoked salmon on a stick or in a wrap from Giggles Campfire Grill.

Veggies

Carrots, peppers, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and kale contain vitamin A and vitamin C that clear brown spots and acne and regulate the production of collagen and elastin. Look for foods that incorporate these vegetables, like Shanghaied Henri’s Carolina Pit-Smoked Brisket Taco, topped with kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and carrots. iPierogi will also be serving Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, filled with seasoned ground pork and rice.

Nuts

Nuts contain vitamin E that moisturizes and heals the skin. Check out Brim’s gluten- and dairy-free Grilled Sota Sandwich complete with cinnamon nut butter and blueberry marmalade. Nut butter contains polyunsaturated fats, protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals—all healthy nutrients your body deserves.

In addition, look for vendors selling foods with:

  • Citrus fruits, known for promoting a radiant and glowing complexion.
  • Berries and sweet potatoes, rich in antioxidants that help minimize wrinkles and dry skin.
  • Green tea, which stops inflammation, slows DNA damage, and can even out skin tone.
  • Walnuts rich in omega-3s and omega-6s, fatty acids that keep the skin smooth and young-looking.

Water

Above all, stay hydrated. Your skin contains 64 percent water. Our bodies lose water constantly, particularly on hot days. Drinking adequate water will help your body’s digestive system, improve circulation, prevent wrinkles, and rid your skin of toxins.
